The Dissertation is the Beginning of the End of a Graduate Career
So we all know how stressful a dissertation can be. You might have times that you do not feel like you want to write and then other times that you are looking to write. How can you do this in a way that is consistent?
Leave Out Your Work
You should leave out your work where you are able to see as well as work on it when it is convenient to you. If you put it away then it will not be on your mind. If instead you leave out the book you are going to read next you are more likely to actually get around to reading it.
Clean Your Space
Another thing you can do is clean up the space you use to work especially if it leaves you feeling a bit disorganized. A desk that is organized and clear can help to get you on track again as well as help to clear your head. Make sure however that you avoid cleaning and organizing as a way of procrastinating.
Allow It To Be Junky
When you are working on your draft you should allow yourself to let it be junk. This will help you get further with it and you will always be able to edit it once you are finished. It is best to get something on the paper and perfect it later than to worry about perfection and get nothing on the paper at all.
Don't try to work on your dissertation 10 or more hours a day. Most people find that 5 hours a day is what is best. You will not be able to write all day long productively and if you try you are likely to find that you will get burnt out. You should also take times for breaks and a little procrastination. Your brain will need to have periodic breaks.
These are just some of the many tips that will help to keep you going with your dissertation. You may feel overwhelmed but if you take the time to clear your mind and work on it a little at a time you are going to find that it really isn't that bad. Write when you can and work on other things such as formatting and organization when you don't feel that you have the ability to actually write on your dissertation. Remember that getting something done is better than getting nothing done at all.
