How to Avoid Plagiarism when Writing a Master's Thesis

One of the biggest problems with any work, is plagiarism. Most of the time, it is accidental, but it is still a problem. When writing any paper, including a Master’s Thesis, there are rules that need to be followed. And by following these rules, the paper will be plagiarism free. Plagiarism; the actions of improperly using someone’s ideas and words as your own.

  1. Is this Plagiarism?
  2. Proper Citing
  3. Proper Reference
  4. Incorporation of Ideas
  • Is this Plagiarism?
  • All because the student uses a topic someone else has, does not automatically make it plagiarized. Many people will use the same topic, and share similar ideas. But using the writer’s own research and words, expressing things in their own way, makes it their own work. Agreeing with someone else is a compliment. Using their words and / or ideas as they used them, is plagiarism.

  • Proper Citing
  • Every style of writing has its own way of citing. Using the style guide will show the student how to properly cite the work. If a quote, or idea is used, cite it as it needs to be in the paper, according to that style. Give credit to the person that came up with the idea, or who it was read/heard from. Some styles use footnotes, so number the quotes or ideas used, then give them proper citing in the footnotes. Others have various ways of citing in the works, make sure these are followed.

  • Proper Reference
  • In the bibliography, make sure the references are noted in full as the style dictates. This way when someone sees the citing, they can come to the bibliography and get the full reference to where the piece came from. Use the style guide to make sure all the references in the bibliography are referenced correctly.

  • Incorporation of Ideas
  • When working on the thesis, there will be a lot of information that will be found that will support the thought of the paper. There is nothing wrong with using them. In fact, it is required. So how to use them without plagiarizing the student? Use only a small segment, usually a sentence to one paragraph. Sometimes using their words is not needed, but their thought. This is fine too, as long as done right. The thing is to incorporate the quote or idea into the writer’s own words and thought. Express the thoughts of the student before and after, and use the quote or thought only to support the student’s own words.
